Overview

The Canon XF705 is the latest (as of this writing) flagship in Canon's XF range of high-end camcorders. It offers advanced functionality and a versatile design. Here are some of the top features of this all-in-one system:

New Codec with Huge Benefits for Broadcasting

With the XF705, Canon is the first to offer High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) video compression inside an MXF container, producing an XF-HEVC file format. HEVC encoding is about twice as fast as AVC/H.264 and allows for 4K UHD 60p 4:2:2 10-bit files to be recorded directly to SD cards. With XF-HEVC, you can use 10-bit color sampling at 4K or Full HD at a wide variety of frame rates and bit rates. Take advantage of internal HDR recording in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) or Perceptual Quantisation (PQ) formats while also outputting a standard definition signal simultaneously over advanced 12G-SDI, which has the bandwidth to support 4K out at 59.94 or 50 FPS. With the HEVC format, you can also stream 4K. These smaller file sizes greatly expand workflow possibilities.

Professional Features, Compact Build

Equipped with 4K-supporting HDMI out, two XLR terminals with independent audio level control, a stereo mini-jack mic terminal, and the aforementioned 12-SDI terminal, the XF705 is prepared for seamless integration into 4K workflows. This is supported by a nearly half-inch EVF, dual SD card slots for relay or simultaneous recording, and a 4" touchscreen LCD. Use the LCD to smoothly and intuitively activate Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which provides fast and accurate autofocus not only in Full HD but in 4K and at frame rates as fast as 120p. The built-in 15x optical zoom lens sports a 5-axis optical image stabilization system throughout its long range. The optical technologies in the lens are borrowed directly from professional broadcast and L-series glass. In Full HD, you can get up to 30x, or the equivalent of 765mm. Carried over from prior models, an internal 3-density ND filter can be activated with a dedicated button. All of this in a build that spans only about 10" tall and 17" long, including the hood, eyecup, and shoulder pad.

Latitude and Canon Log

Featuring a 1" CMOS sensor, the XF705 has an immediate advantage over cameras in this class with only 1/2-inch and 1/3-inch sensors. Its image processing platform boasts dual DIGIC DV 6 processors for highly sensitive, low-noise footage. Take advantage of wide color space options, including the Canon Log 3 gamma curve, which allows for easy matching with Cinema EOS cameras as well as providing complete color grading control in post production.

Designed to be operated comfortably by a single operator, the Canon XF705's pro-level connectivity, internal 4K UHD 60p 4:2:2 10-bit recording, advanced 12G-SDI interface, IP streaming, and a 25.5-382.5mm (equivalent) 4K L-series quality lens all help make it the ideal tool for both solo filmmakers as well as broadcast professionals.
